Spring Break for the Kids (Part 2) Includes Easter

The second half of the kids' spring break was pretty cool.

On Thursday morning we met our friends, the Mountains (minus the dads) at Descanso Gardens.  The kids were a little disappointed that the train wasn't running (it was supposed to but it was being fixed), but we still had fun exploring and enjoyed the beautiful flowers that are in bloom.
On Friday our family of four went to the Aquarium of the Pacific with my parents, Nana and Papa.

In the evening, Eric and I went on a double date with my teaching partner, Tracey, and her husband, Jon.  The tickets were given to us by a parent of one of our students.  The seats were in the premier reserve section, which is way better than the seats I usually sit in a Staples Center.  We had fun!
There was a ceremony honoring the 71-72 Lakers, which included some big names in Laker history.
We walked around and saw the plaza at LA Live, which Jon helped design.  Pretty cool, huh?
We were REALLY close to the game!
On Saturday morning we attended an Easter Egg hunt hosted by the Dunn family.  Their home is always lovely and the kids had fun.  Our kids and the Boschetti kids got to decorate bunnies with stickers.
Then there was an egg hunt.
Group pictures of 5 little kids is nearly impossible

Some peacocks tried the crash the party.  Well, they showed up in the neighbors' yard.
We had a nice Easter today.

It started out pretty well.  The kids seemed to enjoy the fun baskets the Easter bunny left for them.

But then we discovered a leeeetle problem.  Apparently the eggs the Easter bunny hid in our backyard were being found and opened and the treats inside were being eaten by A BLUE JAY!  Yep, the little stinker was messing up our egg hunt.  Here's the evidence:
And there on the bench is the criminal.

So, we had to switch from our usual plan of the kids getting dressed and hunting for eggs in their nice Easter clothes to getting out in the backyard in jammies and getting the eggs before the blue jay did.
After church and a fairly quiet afternoon we had the family over for dinner.  We got our annual Easter picture, plus a few extras.

As is often the tradition, the grandparents hid the eggs and the kids had a second egg hunt of the day.
The kids go back to school tomorrow after a pretty nice vacation.  Now it's Eric and my turn!

Spring Break for the Kids (Part 1) Includes Ashlynn Losing Her First Tooth

For like 11 years, Eric and I never had spring break the same week.  A few years ago our weeks finally matched up... but that was the year Ashlynn started preschool and her week was different from ours.  That has pretty much been the case ever since.  This year Carter started preschool and guess what... Ashlynn and Carter have spring break one week and Eric and I have the following week.  Fortunately I only had to work two days of the kids' break.

Despite the fact that we are not all on break together, the kids have had a pretty nice break.  Here's how it has gone.

Last Friday Ashlynn didn't have school in observance of Cesar Chavez Day.  Since Carter and Eric had school, she and I had a fun girls morning together.

We started with breakfast at Mimi's. It took us an hour, but she ate the WHOLE breakfast, because she "didn't want to be wasteful".
We shopped at Macy's for an Easter dress (she loved getting to carry the bag).
After picking Carter up from preschool and eating lunch, there was time for reading.
 And more reading (with Pippa).
And she got her nails painted with sparkle polish.
On Saturday it was gloomy outside so the kids played in the house and read books.
In the evening we had our UCLA friends over for our annual get-together.  This year we did Thai food take-out, which was delicious!
Our friend Ryan is serving in Guantanamo Bay so we got to Skype with him.  Here's Ryan's son, Grant, saying hi to his dad.
 The group (minus Ryan)
This year's new addition, baby Joshua! Isn't he cute?
Sunday morning was spent at church with Ashlynn singing with the kids choir for all 3 Palm Sunday services.  Here she is with her friends Lydia and Amelie.
There was a TON of choreography for the 5 or 6 songs they sung.
How should you spend time between songs?  Wiggle your loose tooth.
  Isn't she cute?
There was a break between services
Carter and I watched the first part of 3rd service from the balcony.  It was a pretty good view!
 She spotted us.
Look at her singing her heart out!
"We fall down.  We lay our crowns...at the feet of Jesus."
 Happy Palm Sunday!
On Monday the kids went to the Los Angeles Zoo with Nana and Papa.  They spent most of the day there and had a fun time.

I was off on Tuesday and it was my dad's birthday.  Ashlynn had a playdate at our house, so I tried to keep Carter busy.  One thing we did was bake peanut butter cookies for my dad's present.  We joked that we were making "peanut butter and pickle cookies, minus the pickles" because my dad likes joking with the kids that he likes to eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches.

We celebrated my dad's birthday with dinner at Beckham Grill and had dessert at our house.

On Wednesday the kids went to Lacy Park with Grandpa to ride their bikes and play.

The evening was quite exciting. First, we decided to let them have their first at-home slumber party (they've had quite a few at Nana and Papa's).  That meant that they got to sleep on the floor in their sleeping bags after watching a show/ movie of their choice (they chose an DVRed episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) while eating popcorn.

 Ready for bed!
Then, when things started to settle down Ashlynn announced that she had been wiggling her loose tooth and it was bleeding.  With a little encouragement, she ended up pulling it out.  She was so proud and excited.
She wanted to share her exciting news with Nana and Papa
Carter checked out the empty spot
Before going to bed, Ashlynn wrote a note to the tooth fairy, asking if she could keep her first tooth (to put into a special "First Tooth" container).
Ashlynn went to bed very anxiously because the was worried that the tooth fairy would not allow her to keep the tooth and it would be gone forever in the morning.  Fortunately, the tooth fairy granted her request and the tooth was there, along with some money.  Lucky girl!

Spring break is off to a great start!
