Ashlynn had a check-up with her pediatric ophthalmologist yesterday.
Mostly it was good news. The great news is that it seems that her eyes are working together, which allows her to have stereo vision (depth perception). This was something I was concerned about/ curious about. I've heard of people who have surgery to fix crossed eyes, only to find that the brain doesn't relearn to use the eyes together. Ashlynn's brain is using the eyes together as a team.
The not-so-great news was that her vision in her weak eye has declined. When we started with this doctor, the vision in her weak eye was up to about 20/40 (but she was unable to have stereo vision because the eyes were crossing). Now that eye is closer to 20/60. He explained that while her good eye is pretty good (and well into what is needed for driving, which is certainly a concern to be aware of), he would like to get her weak eye as strong as possible while she's young, because she's in the final year or so of vision development (which is fairly set by about age 7).
So what that means is that she will be patching her strong eye again. It will just be for 2 hours a day for 6-8 weeks (until her next appointment). He doesn't want more than 2 hours because he doesn't want to compromise the good stuff going on with the eyes working together, which could cause the eyes to cross again.
I don't think she's very happy about patching, but luckily this time, she's able to understand its importance more than she did when she started the last time, at age 3 1/2.
Please pray that this patching does the trick and doesn't compromise the other progress that has been made.
