Candy Land

This morning Carter and I played a board game for the first time.  I decided to start with Candy Land because he knows his colors.

Playing a board game with a little kid for the first time makes you realize how many skills are used when playing games.  Here are a few we encountered today:
  • taking turns,
  • turning over just the top card,
  • observing the card and realizing what it is telling you to do,
  • putting the card down in the right pile,
  • making sure you move your piece, not someone else's,
  • moving your piece to the right spot and leaving it in that spot, and
  • continuing with the game until you reach the finish.
Fortunately, Carter has no concept of being first as you move around the board or that he might want to be the "winner".  That competitiveness will come soon enough. We gave each other a high-five at the end of the game and said, "Good game!"

If you ever want an exercise in patience, play a board game with a 3-year-old.

You are brave and patient to try it, my friend. I wouldn't even go close to a game with my almost 3 year old boy.
