Summer Road Trip Day 9

Our first activity day during our time in Park City was to Heritage Park in Salt Lake City.  The "heritage" it is referring to is the Mormons settling Utah, but mostly showed, through a living history experience, pioneer life in a town of relocated and recreated buildings from the late 1800s.

We took a "train" to the Brigham Young farmhouse.  Apparently he didn't live there much; he lived in Salt Lake City so he was able to attend to his political responsibilities.
The kids learned the history behind, "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite" while we were on a tour of the farmhouse.
We took the "train" to Main Street and visited the school first.

 Writing on a slate.
Carter was "disciplined" for not bringing his homework to school.  At first he thought it was a little funny and then he got mad when the teacher continued to remind him that he must bring his homework everyday.
This is one of my favorite photos from the trip.  He was NOT happy about getting in trouble (especially since he hadn't really done anything wrong).
Later Ashlynn was able to experience another discipline procedure.  Oh, I wish I could use this one in class, but I would probably violate a bullying policy.
 Main Street
The kids made crafts; Ashlynn made a rag doll and Carter put beads on an arrowhead necklace.
Ashlynn LOVES her rag doll.  (Yes, the same kid who saved over $100 to buy an American Girl doll).
There was a petting zoo area with pot-bellied pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, and ducks.  The baby pig was really cute!
 And a free pony-ride
There was a milking demo (I'm not convinced it worked, but it amused the kids).
We checked out two log cabins.  It's hard to believe that large families share such small spaces.
 View out the cabin window
One of the cabins had been a stop on the Pony Express, so this horse played the part of a Pony Express horse.

It was in the upper 90s, so ice cream was a welcome treat.
Ashlynn helped make a row on a seed bead bracelet, based on the traditions of the Native Americans of Utah.
Carter was thrilled to ride on a little train.

The kids checked out a model of a ship that brought Mormons around Cape Horn to San Francisco on their way to Utah.
Finally we panned for "gold" in a stream.  Both kids found a few nuggets.
Of course we had to visit the gift shop. Ashlynn got a sun bonnet and wanted to pose with the indian statue.  Go figure!
It was a fun day and one of Ashlynn's favorite days of our trip.
